What is Comprehensive Car Insurance?

There is a significant difference in price between Comprehensive Car Insurance and Third-Party Property Damage (not to mention CTP or Greenslip Insurance). It can be a bit confusing to know exactly what each type of insurance is, but it can be very costly if you need to make a claim and don’t have the right type of insurance.

Comprehensive Car Insurance is the type of policy that gives you the highest level of protection for your vehicle. It covers damage caused to other vehicles or property, as well as your own vehicle and theft and fire.

There may be other extras that can be covered including windscreen cover, roadside assistance, hire car etc.

If you run a business, there are other options for commercial vehicles and fleet coverage that are worth exploring with your Insurance Broker to ensure you’re covered across all your vehicles and for business-related factors, such as tools or equipment that may be stored/transported in vehicles.

The table below outlines what is generally included in each type of car insurance. It is important to remember that policies do vary and can have different levels of cover or exclusions. Always ask your Broker to explain and/or read your PDS carefully so you know what you are and aren’t covered for.

* Some Third Party Property Damage policies will include Fire and Theft, some will require this as an add-on. Please check with your broker or read your PDS to ensure you understand your level of cover

^ Severe Weather Damage: Claiming for hail damage can limit your ability to take out comprehensive insurance for your vehicle on an ongoing basis. Some insurers will only offer third-party insurance following a hail damage claim, while others will offer limited comprehensive insurance. This is also important to be aware of if you are considering buying a car with pre-existing hail damage.

# A ‘write off’ or your car being ‘totalled’ is when the cost to repair the vehicle is higher than the cost to replace the vehicle/pay out the total cost of that the vehicle is insured for.
